the c.r.a.a.p. test
|
The C.R.A.A.P. test is an acronym for the five criteria used to assess online sources.
Currency – When was the information published? Is it updated regularly? Do all the links function? Is the information current enough for your research? Currency varies for topics (i.e. web page analysis of Shakespeare's works will relevant for a lot longer than a web page about technology). Relevance – What is the target audience of this source? To find out, try visiting the "About" page on the website. Reflect on the purpose of the assignment to confirm the information is relevant. Authority – Search for more information about the author(s) credentials. Check Media Bias/Fact Check to help determine credibility. Accuracy – Do an initial fact check and review the page for typos. Look for cited references and cross check them. Purpose – Reread the source to find any statement of the author's bias. Identify any source of financial support for the source (e.g. for research projects) and look for a 'Legal' or 'Disclaimer' section. Reflect on your own biases and source choices. |
