Before You Get Started

Since you must include in-text citations, it is very important to keep track of exactly where you are finding different sources of information. Good note taking is important.  For Ms. Wagner to be able to monitor progress and provide ongoing feedback, please take your notes directly into the Google Doc template.

Below, there is a list of places to find good research sources.  Remember to always evaluate the credibility of sources yourself by applying the CRAAP Method.   This is an essential step in the research process and a key component of this assignment.

In-text citations, also known as parenthetical citations, are used when summarizing, paraphrasing, or directly quoting another person's ideas, research or words.  Since this is a research paper where you explore other people's ideas,  it should include a high number of in-text citations.  The APA style follows the author-date citation format.  Examples:  (Binning, 2013) for one author.  (Binning & Wagner, 2013) for two authors.   Click here for more information on APA7 style in-text citations.

FIND Websites

WebPath Express is a safe and reliable search engine built into the library catalogue.  Each site in the search engine has been reviewed by educators for accuracy and reliability.   WebPath Express can be accessed through the following steps:  Click here for the Library Catalogue.  From the list of secondary schools, select Elgin Park,  then choose Catalogue.  Next, select WebPath Express from the menu on the left.  Searches can be further refined by type of source, grade level,  related topics and more!

Useful Databases

If you are accessing the SD36 online databases from home, see Ms. Wagner or Mrs. Binning for the passwords.  The following databases are recommended for Psychology and can be accessed here or by clicking on their pictures.

EBSCO Explora Secondary Schools:  Includes some of the same research as EBSCO Academic Search Premier (see below).  It is more accessible but does not always have as much depth of information.  Best for beginning research.
Picture
Gale Global Issues: Has a focus on contemporary issues such as mental health, addiction, and trauma.  Contains diverse source types, including journal articles, videos, encyclopedia and newspaper articles.   Best for global, cultural, and societal contexts.

EBSCO Academic Search Premier: Provides access to a wide range of topics related to foundational theories and current research trends in psychology.   Best for advanced research.

CommunicatE findings

You will be presenting your findings in a formal APA7 style research paper, which includes a properly formatted bibliography.  The American Psychological Association has an excellent student guide that will help you set up your paper.  Please note, although there are many acceptable fonts listed in the student guide, your paper must be in Times New Roman 12 pt. font.   Secondly, while a running header is not required on student papers, it is an expectation at the 'Extending' level.

Completing this check list before submitting your paper will help ensure you have fully met the assignment criteria.
